School Days: The Anime So Bad It Made Me Laugh (A Review) 🚢😭
A FriedReads Review of the Most Infuriatingly Hilarious Anime Ever Made
August 2026
Let me tell you about the time I watched an anime that made me lose my mind.
I'd heard about School Days for years. It was infamous. A cultural phenomenon. The anime that pissed off an entire generation of high schoolers.
My friend watched it in high school. He was furious. Absolutely livid. He told me how angry it made him. I was surprised because it's just anime, right?
But his rage piqued my interest.
I didn't care enough to watch it, though. I had better things to do. Like watching paint dry. Or staring at a wall.
Then, one night, boredom got the better of me. I was scrolling, looking for something to watch. I remembered School Days. I thought, screw it, it's like 12 episodes.
I pressed play.
I was not prepared for what I was about to witness.
THE SETUP: A Normal Slice of Life (Lies)
The show starts like any other slice-of-life anime. High school. A shy guy named Makoto. A girl he likes named Kotonoha. A girl who helps them get together named Sekai.
It's cute. It's boring. It's everything I expected.
I was about to turn it off. Then something happened.
Makoto started making choices.
Bad choices. Terrible choices. Choices that made no logical sense.
And I thought: "What the hell is happening?"
THE SLOW DESCENT INTO MADNESS
Let me walk you through the experience.
Phase 1: The Setup
Makoto likes Kotonoha. Sekai helps him get with Kotonoha. It's wholesome. It's sweet. It's boring.
Phase 2: The "Boredom"
Makoto gets "bored" of Kotonoha. Why? Because she didn't let him grope her boobs. I'm serious. That's the reason. She said "maybe later" and he lost his mind.
Phase 3: The Cheating Spree
He cheats on Kotonoha with Sekai. Then with other girls. Then with more girls. He becomes a machine. A machine that makes terrible decisions.
Phase 4: The Betrayal
He gets Sekai pregnant. Then he tells her to get an abortion. On a text message. While he's with Kotonoha. At a fancy restaurant.
Phase 5: The Confrontation
Sekai shows up at his apartment. She finds the food she'd cooked for him in the garbage. She stabs him. Repeatedly. He dies.
Phase 6: The Revenge
Kotonoha finds Makoto's body. She lures Sekai to the roof. She kills her. Then she cuts her open to check if she was actually pregnant.
Phase 7: The Final Shot
The last scene shows Kotonoha on a yacht, cradling Makoto's severed head. She's smiling.
THE FUCKING YACHT SCENE.
A YACHT.
IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.
WITH A SEVERED HEAD.
BUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
WHAT SENSE DOES THIS MAKE?!
THE SCENE THAT BROKE ME
There's a scene in the middle of all this that I need to talk about.
Makoto is with Sekai. Kotonoha shows up. The two girls start arguing. Sekai slaps Kotonoha. Kotonoha doesn't react. She just stands there.
Then Kotonoha tells Sekai that Setsuna—her best friend—also loved Makoto. Sekai is shocked.
Then Kotonoha kisses Makoto. In front of Sekai. Passionately.
MAKOTO DOESN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING. HE JUST STANDS THERE. LETTING IT HAPPEN.
I WAS LIKE: "BRO! WHAT KIND OF FANTASY IS THIS?! WHO THINKS LIKE THIS?!"
Sekai walks away. Makoto doesn't follow. He doesn't say anything. He just stands there.
Kotonoha just defeated her romantic rival with a single kiss, and Makoto was a bystander in his own life.
I couldn't stop laughing.
THE MAGICAL ENDING
But the ending. THE ENDING.
Everything that came before was building to this one moment. Every bad choice. Every stupid decision. Every moment of illogical nonsense. It all led to this.
Everyone dies.
MAKOTO DIES. SEKAI DIES. EVERYONE DIES!
It's like the show was punishing me for watching it. Like it was saying, "You sat through 11 episodes of this garbage, so now you get to watch everyone get murdered."
And I was all for it.
I was screaming at my screen: "YES! EVERYONE DIE! YES!"
It was cathartic. It was beautiful. It was the most satisfying ending I've ever seen.
Not because it was good. Because it was JUSTICE.
MY FRIEND WAS RIGHT
I called my friend after I finished. The one who watched it in high school.
"You were right," I said. "This anime is absolute garbage."
He laughed.
"Did you get to the ending?" he asked.
"I laughed so hard," I said. "The yacht scene. The severed head. THE YACHT!"
"I told you," he said. "I was so angry when I watched it. I couldn't believe it."
"I get it now," I said. "I totally get it."
THE RESEARCH: I'm Not Alone in This
Apparently, I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Other people have pointed out that Makoto's decisions are "so absolutely idiotic that it makes me want to slam my desk in rage." The show is so poorly written that "every wrong decision that could be taken was taken" in a way that "borders on being genuinely hard to believe."
Even critics who like the show admit that it's frustrating. One MyAnimeList user gave it a 7/10, saying that "for many people, they hate the characters but that's the point." Makoto is "meant to be hated."
The show is so bad that it became a meme. There's literally a "Nice Boat Day" on September 19th because the final episode was replaced with footage of a Norwegian ferry after a real-life crime. The "Nice Boat" meme was born, and it's still alive today.
THE VERDICT: 10/10 for Pure Comedy
School Days is the worst anime I've ever watched.
And I loved every second of it.
It's not good. It's not well-written. The characters aren't believable. The plot is nonsensical. The decisions are idiotic.
But it's entertaining. It's chaotic. It's the most unintentionally hilarious thing I've ever seen.
You know why I loved it? Because I watched it from the comfort of my home, with no emotional investment, after hearing about how terrible it was for years.
If I watched it blind, I would have been furious. But I knew it was coming. And it delivered.
THE FINAL LINE
School Days is the anime equivalent of watching a trainwreck in slow motion. You know it's going to end in tragedy. You know everyone is going to die. You know it makes no sense. And you can't look away.
A yacht. A severed head. A girl singing about love. WHAT SENSE DOES THIS MAKE?!
10/10. Would watch again.
🚢😭
